Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?
You are a person with obesity
One of the primary factors that will help us answer your question, “am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?” is your body mass index. You must be classified as obese to qualify. One of these two points must exist:
- You have a BMI of 40 or more.
- You have a BMI 35 to 39.9 with serious medical conditions associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, type II diabetes, sleep apnea, or high cholesterol.
See our BMI calculator.
You have tried other weight loss methods
Bariatric surgery isn’t a first line of defense against obesity. You need to try other weight loss methods first. These include supervised diets, drug therapy, exercise, and/or behavior modification weight loss programs. If your obesity persists despite your efforts, you might be a candidate. Some insurers require you to have had 3 to 6 months of medically supervised weight loss. Remember, surgery is just one of the tools you will need in your weight loss journey.
