Weight Loss Opportunities Available in Greensboro

Central Carolina Surgery Bariatrics is Greensboro’s premier resource for weight loss surgery and compassionate support from first appointment to final follow-up. Led by Matthew B. Martin, MD, FACS, our cutting-edge surgical procedures can be customized to patient health, lifestyle choices, and goals.

Our current bariatric surgical resources include:

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The oldest and most common weight loss surgery, a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is performed by bypassing the intestines in order to create a shortened digestive tract. As a part of this procedure, the stomach is also reduced to minimize appetite and control urges by triggering changes to gastrointestinal hormones.

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve surgery, also referred to as a sleeve gastrectomy, is a procedure in which a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a sleeve behind roughly the size and shape of a banana. This process preserves the digestive tract while shrinking the size of the stomach in order to reduce appetite.

Gastric sleeve surgery can stand alone, but it can also be used as a precursor to a gastric bypass in patients who do not initially qualify.

LAP-BAND (Adjustable Gastric Banding)

Adjustable gastric banding, also known as LAP-BAND, is a form of bariatric surgery that does not alter or permanently shift the digestive tract. Instead, a small silicone band is placed around the stomach and inflated with saline to restrict food consumption. Adjustments are possible via a port in the wall of the stomach, allowing for easy alteration if needed.

Revisional Procedures

In some cases, patients are unable to achieve their goals after weight loss surgery. For those who experience insufficient weight loss or weight re-gain after an initial surgery, a revision procedure provides a way to adjust surgical results to help patients get back on the right track. Revisional surgeries are not always appropriate and will vary based on original procedure.
